“When the Sky Turned Orange,” produced by ColorCreative co-founders Issa Rae, Deniese Davis, and Talitha Watkins, will debut at the Pan African Film Festival on February 10. According to Deadline, the film explores how community members came together to provide support for families affected by the fire.
The Eaton Fire destroyed roughly 9,400 structures, damaged more than 1,000, burned over 14,000 acres, and caused 17 deaths. Financial losses are estimated between $95 billion and $164 billion.
Altadena native B.P. Edwards directed the documentary alongside a team of filmmakers from ColorCreative’s inaugural Find Your People program, a training initiative providing mentorship and resources to creators. Michael Jordan’s Black Community Commitment through Nike provided partial funding for the project. The project’s producers include Maia Miller, with Watkins, Davis, and Angelíque LaFrance-Hohl serving as executive producers.
Edwards has a personal connection to the story. After witnessing the local response to the wildfire disaster, he felt compelled to document the recovery and mobilization efforts.
“To me, B.P. Edwards represents the future of filmmaking,” said Watkins, president of ColorCreative. “As a member of our inaugural Find Your People Program cohort, he embodies the heart of our mission, which is developing and nurturing emerging creatives who are deeply committed to authenticity in storytelling.”
The Pan African Film Festival runs February 16-22, with screenings at the Culver Theater and Cinemark Baldwin Hills Crenshaw.
