*Halle Berry called out California Governor Gavin Newsom at the New York Times’ DealBook conference over his repeated veto of the Menopause Care Equity Act.
As Deadline reports, Berry, 58, highlighted the lack of attention given to women’s health and aging, declaring, “And with the way he’s overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us in midlife, he probably should not be our next president either.”
The Oscar-winning actress continues to use her platform to emphasize the personal impact of menopause, sharing her own experience with unexpected symptoms at age 54. Speaking during a June 9 Bare It All women’s health panel, Berry said, “I had no idea that I was in menopause at this time of my life… So I had this unrealistic idea that maybe I would — okay, don’t laugh — but maybe I would just skip it.”
Actress Halle Berry slammed Gov. Newsom for ‘overlooking’ and ‘devaluing’ half the population by vetoing a menopause bill she backed—twice:

She described the fear of losing her femininity as her symptoms appeared while beginning a relationship with Van Hunt, admitting, “I was really afraid at that time that I would never enjoy that part of my femininity again and that I had lost that.”
Berry’s experience, initially misdiagnosed as herpes, led her to research menopause and identify the lack of awareness among women and healthcare providers. She founded Respin Health and partnered with Joylux CEOs Colette Courtion and Dr. Sarah de la Torre to develop products addressing intimacy and pelvic health. Berry urged women to speak openly about menopause, saying, “It takes being bold, talking about it, being loud about it, not being afraid to talk about it, not feeling shame, giving other women permission to talk about it.”
In addition to her personal advocacy, Berry has publicly criticized Newsom’s veto in a Time column, writing that the decision “represents a failure of Gov. Newsom’s commitment to women.”
She stressed the broader societal impact, noting, “When women are struggling silently through perimenopause and menopause, trying to hold their families, careers, relationships and communities together, it doesn’t just affect women. It affects every household. It affects the workplace. It affects the economy.”
