*A newly introduced Gmail feature now allows users to update their primary @gmail.com address without starting over, offering more flexibility for those looking to move on from outdated or unwanted usernames.
Through account settings, eligible users can choose a different email handle while keeping their existing inbox, files, and account history unchanged. The previous address remains active as an alias, meaning incoming messages will still arrive in the same mailbox, and both addresses can be used to access services like Drive, YouTube, and Maps.
According to Forbes, the update has drawn attention following comments from Google’s CEO, who wrote, “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it,” adding, “Say goodbye to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).” Users can now “go to your Google Account settings and choose any name available,” while still retaining access through their original login.

While the change simplifies what was once a complicated process, some analysts say it does little to address broader concerns about email privacy and security. “An email address used to be permanent but now it’s finally editable like a username, which is a huge shift in how identity works online,” says ESET’s Jake Moore. He also notes that “old addresses will still work as aliases,” which “potentially increases impersonation and phishing attacks.”
Additional warnings suggest the update could interfere with spam protections. The security website Security Boulevard cautions that “as of March 31st, Google is allowing users to change their primary Gmail address username. Although a nice feature for those who created unfortunate names originally, it may also undermine spam and phishing blocking.” They further explain that “renaming the account is like starting fresh,” which may allow unwanted messages to bypass existing filters.
Google has indicated the rollout is ongoing, stating, “The ability to change your Google Account email address is gradually rolling out to all users, so this option may not be available to you right now.”
As availability expands, users are encouraged to stay alert to phishing attempts and consider the broader implications of changing their primary email identity.
