*Chris Brown was granted bail by a London court on charges of grievous bodily harm related to a 2023 Mayfair nightclub incident.
“From the cage to the stage!” the music superstar wrote on Instagram after Wednesday’s bail hearing.
According to XXL, the 36-year-old R&B crooner is expected to enter a plea on June 13 at Southwark Crown Court. Brown was arrested in Salford, Greater Manchester, on May 15 following his arrival in the UK, and had remained in custody after initially being denied bail. Prosecutors allege he struck music producer Abe Diaw multiple times with a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle at Tape nightclub, before continuing the assault with punches and kicks. Diaw was hospitalized with serious injuries, and the incident was reportedly captured on CCTV. The producer has also filed a $16 million lawsuit against Brown.
At an earlier hearing, Judge Joanne Hirst deemed Brown a flight risk and transferred the case to Crown Court due to its severity. Brown’s legal team offered £250,000 in security and agreed he would stay away from nightclubs, but the court originally refused his release.
However, according to the BBC, a London court has now freed Brown on bail. While he has not yet been asked to enter a plea, the singer will be allowed to begin his Breezy Bowl XX World Tour as scheduled under the terms of his bail. The tour kicks off in Amsterdam on June 8 and includes stops in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Glasgow in June and July.
The case gained additional attention with the recent arrest of rapper HoodyBaby, born Omololu Akinlolu, who was also charged with grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the same incident. As XLL reports, the role HoodyBaby allegedly played has not been fully detailed.
If found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent, Brown could face up to 16 years in a UK prison. This case may be one of the most serious legal battles of his career, and its outcome could reshape his public and professional future.
The latest charges bring Brown’s criminal history back to the spotlight. He pleaded guilty in 2009 to assaulting pop star Rihanna and was later involved in a 2013 assault in Washington, D.C. Critics argue this pattern of behavior points to unresolved personal issues, as explored in the 2024 documentary “Chris Brown: A History of Violence.”
