*Arby’s is shutting down restaurants in multiple states as the fast-food industry grapples with mounting financial pressures heading into 2026. At least 14 locations have closed this year, though the company hasn’t issued an official closure list.
As TechStock² reports, the affected stores span eight states: California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington. Tennessee experienced particularly significant closures, with restaurants in Cordova, Germantown, Memphis, and Murfreesboro going dark. California saw shutdowns in Fresno and Victorville, while other closures occurred in Talleyville, Delaware; Laurel, Maryland; Audubon, New Jersey; Pullman, Washington; and North Charleston, South Carolina.
Fast-food chains continue to grapple with ongoing pressures such as rising wages, escalating rent payments, and steeper ingredient prices. These financial burdens are compelling operators to close locations that are not performing well.
Arby’s operates primarily through a franchise model, in which independent operators own and run individual locations while paying fees and royalties to the corporate parent. Due to this decentralized approach, store closures typically occur without any official statements from the company, since franchise owners make their own decisions to shut down locations that are no longer profitable.
The trend extends beyond Arby’s across the fast-food sector. Wendy’s interim CEO Ken Cook recently described certain stores as locations that “do not elevate the brand and are a drag” when announcing closures, highlighting the industry’s focus on maintaining profitable, brand-strengthening restaurants. Jack in the Box is implementing its own significant restructuring plan, closing numerous locations amid rising beef prices and declining customer satisfaction affecting sales performance.
These trends highlight a wider shift across the fast-food sector, where long-standing brands are adjusting to changing economic pressures and shifting customer preferences, necessitating careful strategic changes in their operations.
