*The “28 Days Later” franchise is returning with its latest chapter, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” and the first trailer has just dropped.
The sequel picks up after the events of “28 Years Later,” following Spike (Alfie Williams) as he is rescued from the infected by Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) and his mysterious cult. Ralph Fiennes and O’Connell also reprise their roles, joined by Erin Kellyman, Lewis-Parry, and Cillian Murphy, who returns as Jim, the survivor from the original outbreak in “28 Days Later.”
Alex Garland returns as the writer, and Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) directs, taking over from Danny Boyle, who remains on board as a producer. Fiennes told Entertainment Weekly that the film will continue to explore themes of “human violence” alongside the ongoing threat of the Rage Virus.

The plot synopsis suggests darker human struggles will take center stage: “Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship — with consequences that could change the world as they know it — and Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival — the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.”
Fiennes also highlighted moments of raw humanity in the film, including a dramatic scene involving an infected woman giving birth to an uninfected child, questioning whether any part of humanity remains in those affected by the virus.
“I can say that the themes that we touched on in the scene on the train, the moment of labor, the humanity — it is a critical moment in the life of a mother and child,” he said.

Fiennes continued, “The ultimate human moment is an infected woman who is giving birth to a baby who is not infected. The theme of innate humanity — is it still alive in the soul, in the heart, in the mind of an infected person? Are they completely corrupted? Are they only rabid? Or is there the possibility of something? Something human, it’s still there.”
“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is set to hit theaters on January 16, 2026, promising to expand the universe while exploring the darker sides of human nature in a post-Rage Virus world. Watch the trailer above.
