*Author and activist Marc Lamont Hill opened up during the June 12 episode of The Joe Budden Podcast about a disturbing attack he endured in 2024, when a woman assaulted him at a speaking event in Philadelphia.
During a Q&A on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Hill was pepper-sprayed in the face during the Q&A session by a woman he said had been stalking him. “She had written a letter to me, saying that she was trying to talk to me about how the CIA and Joe Biden were trying to frame her for murder,” Hill shared, Complex reports.
The woman had previously vandalized his bookstore, Uncle Bobbie’s, using red spray paint and nearly throwing a brick through its window. Despite these actions, police only issued a ticket before releasing her.
As she approached the stage during the event, Hill gradually recognized her. “She was like, ‘You don’t know me, Marc? You don’t know me, Marc?’” he recalled. Alarmed, he told her to stop walking. Concerned she might be armed, he feared for his life in that moment. “I’m thinking, ‘If she’s about to shoot me, this is a really terrible way to die.’” Instead, she sprayed him in the eye with pepper spray.
Video footage captured Hill jumping from his seat and retreating backstage while someone else restrained the woman. Hill, however, refused to escalate matters with the police.

“You can hear me on the tape say, ‘Do not call the police,’” he emphasized, citing his views on criminal justice reform. “I walk it like I talk it. She was mentally ill.”
Later, he returned to the stage to inform the audience that the same woman had previously targeted his bookstore. Budden and his co-hosts joked that the incident stemmed from a romantic entanglement. “Did you hit it?” Budden quipped, to which Hill firmly responded, “No, to be clear: Not only did I not hit, I never met her before. It was clear she was a crazy person, right?”
Hill later posted about the incident on X, reassuring the public he was unharmed.
