*Gervonta Davis became the focus of intense debate after his majority draw against Lamont Roach on Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
During the fight, Davis unexpectedly dropped to one knee in the ninth round after a jab from Roach, momentarily struggling with his vision. While his corner quickly wiped his eye with a towel, the referee chose not to count it as a knockdown—a decision that sparked outrage among spectators, as boxing rules typically require a mandatory count when a fighter touches the canvas.
After the fight, Davis explained the incident by claiming that grease from his hair got into his eyes, but his explanation was met with boos from the crowd.
“I got my hair done two days ago, and she put grease in my s**,”* Davis said. “It was sweating, running into my face, burning my eyes.” As the crowd reacted with boos, he defended himself, adding, “Why y’all acting like I’m lying? This is real. Look at my hair, I just got it done.”
His hairstylist, however, quickly refuted his claim. New York-based stylist LeeBTheBrand took to Instagram to dispute Davis’ excuse before deleting her post.

“I did his hair Wednesday. It’s Saturday. He did press, gym, weigh-in. That’s no excuse. How much grease did I use, damn,” she wrote, per Hot97.
She also shared a video of Davis at her salon and an image of the product she used, pointing out that it specifically said “no grease.”
Meanwhile, Roach suggested the referee’s decision may have cost him a victory. One judge scored the fight 115-113 for Davis (now 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts), while the other two had it even at 114-114.
“If you voluntarily take a knee and the ref starts counting, it’s a knockdown. If that’s a knockdown, I win. I thought I pulled it out. I want to run it back,” Roach said.

Davis reacted to the controversial debate, writing, “They took the fight from me and made it a draw because of that bulls*** knee. But I landed the most punches. He didn’t even hit me when I took the knee. I get it, I shouldn’t have done that, but that hair grease was burning my eyes!”
