*In an exclusive conversation with Greg Maurice, Filmhub’s Acquisition Lead, we explore how the company is transforming film distribution for independent creators. With a strong commitment to meritocracy and equitable access, Filmhub is quickly becoming a top choice for filmmakers worldwide.
As a champion of inclusivity in the film industry, Filmhub ensures that all filmmakers—regardless of background—have an equal opportunity for success. This mission is at the core of its newly launched Black Cinema Vertical, which prioritizes authentic storytelling and provides Black filmmakers with the tools and platforms to reach global audiences.
“I go to a lot of different film festivals. And because I’ve been doing it for so long, now a lot of filmmakers come to me when they have a project, they want to know the distribution strategy, and how they can monetize it. At FilmHub, now we have a vertical dedicated strictly for that,” Maurice explained.
“There are a lot of talented, young, Black filmmakers across the country, and they don’t know where to go and they don’t know how to distribute their titles. We’re trying to be the hub for them and the place to advocate for them and figure out the strategy for them to monetize their titles,” he added.
“Specifically for the Black cinema space, we’re probably the largest film distributor out there,” he continued.

“We are very different because we value transparency, which is very unique in this industry,” Maurice stated.
“We have a digital dashboard and accounting dashboard, where filmmakers, once they create an account, they’ll be able to get reporting and see the performance of their titles. We have over 150 channel partners, and a lot of those partners, whatever data and reporting that they share with us, we make that available for our filmmakers, which is very unique because most of the other distributors don’t make that information available to them. But for us, we feel like by being transparent, by providing more information, that’s going to create more trust within that community.”
How does this approach help level the playing field for independent filmmakers, especially those who have traditionally faced barriers in this industry?
“When you think about distribution in general whether it’s other studios or traditional distributors most agreements are exclusive, often locking filmmakers in for 10 to 15 years. That can create a lot of skepticism because filmmakers are essentially handing over control of their title for a long period, sometimes without full transparency,” said Maurice. “We understand those concerns, which is why we offer flexibility. The beauty of what we do is that we provide both exclusive and non-exclusive options. Filmmakers can choose a non-exclusive partnership with us, meaning they retain control and can leave if they’re not happy. But for those looking for exclusive deals, we also offer opportunities that maximize visibility and revenue while ensuring transparency. The key is that we work with filmmakers to find the best approach for their needs we’re not here to lock them into long-term contracts without options.”
What is Black Cinema Vertical?
“As a company, we distribute a lot of titles, but we wanted to create a sub-label to emphasize our dedication that we’re putting into the Black cinema space. We already partner with a lot of Black filmmakers, we wanted to double down, triple down for the public to know about our dedication. We highlight that to the industry and for the rest of the world to know we are in that space,” Maurice said.
“We watch a lot of content in the box office, but most of the time, a lot of channels don’t acquire a lot of Black content. Our community is still being underserved. So for us, we understand it, we see the data, and we want to highlight that, we want to do more.”
