*Cynthia Erivo, her girlfriend Lena Waithe, and Cynthia’s “Wicked” co-star Ariana Grande were all in attendance at the Golden Globes Sunday night, and fans claim they spotted tension at the cast table.
Cynthia and Ariana, who allegedly bonded while filming “Wicked,” were seated near each other, with Lena by Cynthia’s side. Fans began analyzing interactions and subtle cues from the event, leading to theories about the tension between Lena and Ariana. A viral TikTok video fueled the rumors, The Sun reports.
“So apparently, according to the grapevine, the grapevine being the internet, Lena Waithe, who is Cynthia Erivo’s partner, has been making some kind of cryptic post,” the TikToker explained.
The content creator highlighted that Waithe shared an edited photo featuring Paul Mescal and Ariana, where Paul says: “I’m watching you guys in the press tour…” to which Ariana responds: “Insufferable, yes”.
Lena also shared an image of Ariana photobombing someone on the red carpet. Additionally, the TikToker posted a screenshot of the Emmy winner’s IG Story of a quote about “maturity in a relationship” and “creating a false story” based on “inner tension”.
One X user reacted to a photo from the Golden Globes showing Ariana and Cynthia laughing while Lena appears stoic. “Ariana and Cynthia just laughing in her face. Somebody pray for Lena Waithe I won’t but somebody probably should,” the person wrote.
On TikTik, one person said: “Oh this is messy.”

Erivo and Waithe began their relationship in 2020. Lena was previously married to producer Alana Mayo, whom she met in 2017. Their marriage in 2019 was short-lived, ending in divorce in 2020 amid rumors of infidelity. Reports suggest Lena and Cynthia first met at the 2018 Met Gala. Following Lena’s divorce, rumors circulated that she quickly moved on to a relationship with Cynthia.
