*In a triumphant development for advocates of justice and accountability, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office has dropped all felony charges against 14-year-old Kamela, an African American female, who was the victim of a brutal assault at Jehue Middle School in Colton, CA about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
This decision comes after a coalition of African American leaders in Southern California rallied to support Kamela (her last name is being withheld because of her age) and demand accountability for the violence she suffered.
Kamela’s ordeal began when she was assaulted by a male student during class. The shocking incident, captured on cell phone video, showed the much larger Latino male student violently slamming Kamela’s head onto a desk, rendering her unconscious while bystanders hurled racial slurs. This act of aggression not only left Kamela physically injured but also raised significant questions about the school’s responsibility to protect its students. Charges were also dropped against the male student as well.
Upon hearing about the assault, community leaders quickly united to advocate for Kamela and her family. Today, Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic Hope had this to say:
“Today is a day that we claim total victory. Our coalition of faith and community leaders put up a united front and sent a strong message that we will never tolerate attacks against African American children. We will organize and shine a bright light on injustice.”

Ali’s statement continued: “There’s no question the press conferences with African American leaders speak out publicly and demanding accountability from the school teacher who sat in class and he did nothing to stop the assault to the criminal justice system and their school to prison pipeline which targets African American youth with trumped up charges to ensure that they have asked criminal record.
“We were determined that we would not let this happen to Kamela. I want to thank Pastor Casey, Pastor Anthony “Shep” Crawford Pastor Joe Paul, and Adai Lamar of KJLH Radio station for getting the word out about this injustice and helping achieve victory for Kamela, her family, and our community. ”
The coalition’s efforts highlighted concerns not only about Kamela’s situation but also about the systemic issues that often leave young Black students vulnerable to violence and insufficient support from both educational and legal systems.
The fallout didn’t end with the charges being dropped. In addition to advocating for Kamela, the coalition raised concerns about the teacher present during the assault. Eyewitnesses reported that the teacher, who was able-bodied, failed to intervene, thus violating educational codes intended to protect students from harm. This lack of action raises troubling questions about how incidents of bullying and violence are handled in schools, particularly for marginalized students.

Kamela’s mother, Christal, expressed her heartbreak over the attack and the stigma that has followed it. She described Kamela as a kind, shy girl who loved school and drawing. The tragic outcome of the incident has significantly impacted both Kamela’s physical and emotional health. Following the attack, Kamela has suffered from severe migraines, emotional trauma, and has been unable to embrace her once-joyful spirit.
Furthermore, the aftermath of the assault saw Kamela facing unjust charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon, simply for trying to defend herself. This scenario reflects a disturbing trend of victim-blaming within institutional frameworks that often target vulnerable students rather than supporting them in moments of crisis.
To assist in Kamela’s recovery, her family initiated a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $25,000 to cover medical expenses, legal fees, and other associated costs. In her appeal, Christal conveyed the desperation of their situation, highlighting the financial burden placed upon families facing similar challenges.
“We are seeking your support to help Kamela heal from not only this horrific attack but also the injustices that followed,” she wrote.
The warm response from the community has underscored the power of collective action in the face of injustice. The support for Kamela is a reminder that community advocacy can have tangible outcomes, particularly when it comes to addressing the safety and well-being of children in schools. As Kamela begins her road to recovery, it is essential to reflect on the lessons learned from this tragic incident. The responsibility of schools extends beyond education; they must ensure a safe environment in which students can learn and thrive. The fight for justice for Kamela is not just about one girl’s experience, but about creating a framework that protects all students from harm.
