*There’s a reason why “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″ is winning at the box office. We’re talking about a star-studded cast including Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, and Tika Sumpter.
This latest installment brings action, comedy, and warm family moments. Sumpter, reprising her role as Maddie Wachowski, spoke to us about her experience filming the movie, Maddie’s Evolution and how this family-oriented franchise resonates with her.
“Maddie is very much part of the film’s heart,” Tika shared. “She’s the caretaker, protector, and grounding force for Sonic and the team.
She adds: “When Sonic makes mistakes or needs help, Tom (James Marsden) and I always have his back. It’s been a nice journey to step back into this character.”

In “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Maddie and Tom face an “empty nest” as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are dispatched to Tokyo to confront the franchise’s newest villain, Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves. Reflecting on Maddie and Tom’s journey as surrogate parents.
“It’s like seeing the birds fly from the nest and realizing, ‘Oh, we actually enjoy the chaos in our house.’ There’s a balance in that chaos, and I think they realize they want it back.”
As a parent herself, Tika drew parallels between her real-life experiences and her on-screen role.
“What I’ve learned is to enjoy what you have in the moment. My daughter is becoming more independent, and I find myself wanting that chaos back.
She continues: “You complain about the noise, but when it’s gone, you sit there talking about your kids.”
For Tika, working on a family-friendly film like “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” stands out in her diverse career.
“This is the first franchise my daughter can actually watch.”
My other projects are too adult, but Maddie allows me to play a character who’s both grounded and complex in a way that works for this story.”
Director Jeff Fowler praised Tika’s energy on set.
“Tika is a ray of sunshine. Her laugh and smile light up the soundstage, and she brings a warmth that makes everyone feel relaxed. Maddie and Tom’s dynamic feels authentic because Tika and James Marsden are such devoted parents in real life.”
The film takes audiences on a globe-trotting adventure from Green Hills to London, Tokyo, and beyond. It combines stunning visuals and high-octane action, solidifying its place as one of the most successful video game-based franchises.
