*Pastor Keion Henderson is catching heat over a sermon he gave in which he said there is “no blessing connected” to giving to poor people.
“Here’s the other problem with the church,” he states in a clip of his preachings, Vibe reports. “Anytime a person is in need ya’ll go to running and dropping money. But let me tell you something, the poor will be with you always and there is no blessing connected to blessing the poor, other than getting back what you gave to them — but no multiplication.”
The pastor continued, “Multiplication is segregated for tithes and offering. When you give to the poor, the only thing you do is help them but you don’t help yourself. So when you give a dollar to somebody on the street talking about ‘but I did my job,’ God like ‘thank you, but it ain’t gonna help you.’ Charity does not bring wealth, only the tithe does that.”
In the comments of The Neighborhood Talk’s Instagram video of the pastor, one person wrote, “Helping others is NOT supposed to help YOU! You are helping someone else who is unable to return the favor. That’s the blessing.”
Another Instagram user added, “You don’t tithe to be blessed. Further you give to the poor out of obedience to and love for God, who also loved the least of these – not because you get something out of doing so. This is why celebrity Christianity will never work.” A third commenter wrote, “He needs to be quiet before the boys start telling on him.”
Meanhile, we reported earlier that Henderson, the husband of Shaunie Henderson (ex-wife of Shaquille O’Neal) went viral recently for silencing a ‘loud’ church member during Sunday service. It sparked debate online about the proper way to worship in church.
The footage shows Pastor Henderson leading a prayer followed by a song. As he sang, a woman in the choir shouted, almost drowning out his voice. Henderson briefly stopped singing, snapped his fingers at the woman, and told her to “shh” before continuing the worship song.
“Silence in the name of Jesus,” Henderson said.
After catching backlash online for the way he handled the woman, Pastor Henderson and Shaunie were guests on “Tamron Hall” and addressed the incident.
“Well, you know – social media is into cuts, not context. And every suggestion that I’ve got from every naysayer, I’ve already done. This is a four-year battle, right? This is ongoing. So I’ve already talked to her personally, I’ve already had ushers go up to her, I’ve already had prayer warriors. I’ve had everything. So she did it publicly, after being asked not to,” Pastor Henderson explained.
“As a pastor, I know the difference between disturbance and worship. What people have to understand is that every time you hear noise in church, it isn’t worship and so there has to be order,” he continued. “For instance, it’s okay to applaud in this room right now. But if somebody got up and just started clapping right now, I’m sure somebody would bring order to the room. And so what I did is I brought order to the room so people can hear God and not her. And I would do it again if I needed to.”
