*Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King discussed their friendship and addressed gay rumors about their relationship in a conversation with Melinda French Gates for the “Moments That Make Us” series.
“I think we’ve shared pretty much everything and I would have to say, it wasn’t even a matter of navigation,” Winfrey said, TODAY.com reports.
“You know, for years, people used to say we were gay, and listen, we were up against that forever. And people still may think it,” she continued.
King added, “I used to say Oprah, ‘You gotta do a show on this, because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday night with people thinking we’re gay.’ Because if we were gay, we would tell you.”
Winfrey noted that the gay rumors were possibly fueled by people not being “accustomed to seeing women with this kind of truth bond,” she said.
Oprah has maintained a romance with her longtime beau Steadman Graham, who is also rumored to be on the down low. In a nutshell, many believe Steadman is Oprah’s beard while Gayle is the love of her life.
“Gayle is happier, not happy, but happier for me for any kind of success or victory or challenge I get through than I am for myself,” said Oprah. “And I feel as happy as she does — I can’t be happier than, cannot surpass Gayle. You cannot out-happy her. I am equally as happy for her.”
In a previous interview, Oprah said, “I understand why people think we’re gay. There isn’t a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it—how can you be this close without it being sexual? How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?”
In that same interview, King said, “The truth is, if we were gay, we would so tell you, because there’s nothing wrong with being gay.”
