*Warner Bros released the official trailer for“Joker: Folie à Deux,” the sequel to the 2019 box office smash, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
As we reported earlier, Todd Philips directed the musical drama, which is set around Arkham Asylum. The storyline centers on Joker and Harley Quinn’s encounter at a psychiatric ward, leading to their wildly dysfunctional joint adventure.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Joker: Folie Ą Deux” finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.
The cast includes Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey, and Zazie Beetz. Watch the new trailer above.
Speaking about choosing Gaga for the role during the film’s presentation at CinemaCon Las Vegas, Phillips said, “We cast Gaga because she’s magic. I was a producer on A Star Is Born … That was the first time I really met her and got to watch her work. As we were writing this script, Scott [Silver], who I wrote it with, kept going back to her.”
Phillips was also asked to confirm if the movie would be a musical.
“We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film,” he explained, EW reports.
“Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film. It didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it,” Phillips added.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” hits theaters on October 4, 2024.
