*We spoke with Molly Kunz, who stars as Phoebe in NBC’s drama “The Irrational” about her character’s evolving journey this season.
The second season premiered on October 8 and was the #1 new show last season in total viewers and the #2 broadcast series, in total viewers among Black audiences. The Irrational was also one of NBC’s top digital launches to-date across all major platforms.
As the second season gets underway, Kunz offered a sneak peek into episode 204, “Formal Ties,” airing Tuesday, October 29, and shared insights into Phoebe’s story arc and pivotal moments. She also discussed the unique dynamic between Phoebe and Alec Mercer, portrayed by series star Jesse L. Martin.
Phoebe’s storyline this season builds on her ongoing struggles. At the end of last season, she switched careers but now she appears to be second-guessing that choice.
“She’s discovering that her professor that she works for now, Professor Myers, is a bit duplicitous,” Kunz said. “Maybe she’s not who Phoebe thought she was and maybe not somebody that she can ultimately respect in a workplace. Phoebe needs to decide if that’s the environment she wants to be in. That’s a big decision.”
She added, “Phoebe is going to really dig into what is going on with this professor. She’s going to discover that there’s much more to the story than she thought there was. And that any decision she makes about how much she exposes this professor is going to be a big deal. She’s really kind of out on a limb.”
Per the official synopsis: “The Irrational” follows world-renowned professor of behavioral science Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) as he lends his unique expertise to high-stakes cases and mysteries. His insight and unconventional approach to understanding human behavior lead him to work alongside varying clients ranging from the FBI to everyday people caught in perplexing situations desperate for answers. With the help of his trusted team and social-science experiments, Alec solves crimes and uncovers the truth to answer intriguing, and irrational, questions.”
The cast also includes Maahra Hill, Travina Springer, and Arash DeMaxi. Kunz said fans can expect Phoebe to make some surprising decisions this season.
“The big theme of the show is irrationality, and humans behave in irrational ways. I think a lot of the decisions that Phoebe makes in this season could arguably be considered irrational,” she said. “It’s fun to see a character who seems to pride herself so much on her intellectual prowess, like Phoebe, end up making some unusual choices.”
Kuntz added, “She’s a human and she will engage in irrational behavior like the rest of us.”
