*Maia Campbell, a beloved ’90s sitcom star, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to her daughter, Elizabeth Elisha Gutierrez.
Elizabeth, known as @so.leesha on TikTok, recently shared a video showcasing Maia’s iconic roles from the past, which went viral.
Despite her fame, Maia’s journey has been challenging. As MadameNoire reports, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998, and faced mental health and substance abuse struggles, leading to her stepping out of the spotlight and losing custody of her daughter. Maia publicly addressed her struggles on “Iyanla Vanzant’s Fix My Life” in 2012 and has since been working on improving her life.
When her mother was dying, Maia told Iyanla she wasn’t allowed to see her.
“[My family] thought I would cause problems,” she told the beloved life coach. “They wouldn’t let me talk to her on the phone.”
“Maia, you were high,” said Iyanla. “Until you can say to me, ‘I did drugs. I ran the streets. I threw my dreams away,’ it will always be about them and you will always be powerless. You gotta own your stuff.”
Maia appeared on the episode seeking guidance from the relationship expert to rebuild her family relationships and address the unresolved guilt she felt over the pain she caused her late mother.
Now, Maia is gradually re-emerging, engaging with fans online, and rebuilding her relationship with her daughter.
