Per Apple TV+, “Manhunt” is a conspiracy thriller about one of history’s best-known but least understood crimes: the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

Starring alongside Simone and Linklater in the seven-part true crime limited series are Antony Boyle, Tobias  Menzies, Will Harrison, Brandon Flynn, Damian O’Hare, Glenn Morshower, Patton Oswalt, and Matt Walsh.

“I don’t know how many people know that this was a coordinated attempt to take down the government and reverse the results of the Civil War,” series star Hamish Linklater told EUR exclusively. “That’s what this young actor was participating in. It was such a terribly perilous moment in our country’s history and we dodged a totally terrible fate by the skin of our teeth. And that’s what the series does.”

In the series, Booth crosses paths with an enslaved woman named Mary Simms at the house of Dr. Samuel Mudd, whom he turns to for help after assassinating Lincoln. SPOILERS BELOW.

Mary Simms was a real Black woman residing in the home of Dr. Mudd, but she undergoes a fictionalized portrayal in “Manhunt.” Mary wasn’t living in the Mudd house after Lincoln’s assassination. In the series, however, she is in the home and aids Dr. Mudd in tending to Booth’s injuries. She subsequently assists authorities in linking the doctor’s involvement in Booth’s escape.

The Cinemaholic writes, “Mary revealed that she had been enslaved by Dr. Mudd for about four years, during which time she was highly mistreated, being whipped repeatedly, even after slavery had been abolished in the country.”

In our exclusive interview with Lovie Simone, she further explains how Mary fits into the world of this historic Lincoln/Booth backdrop and what she hopes viewers will appreciate about this era and its impact on American history through the overall story. Watch what she had to say in the clip below.

“Manhunt” debuted on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, March 15. New episodes will premiere weekly, every Friday through April 19.
