The 66th annual Grammy Awards aired last night, and to say this year’s show was entertaining may be an understatement! From Fantasia’s electric Tina Turner Tribute to Jay-Z calling out inequalities towards Black artists…The night was filled with shocking moments.

Before the main show, the premiere ceremony presented awards to the gospel, contemporary Christian, and rap/hip hop categories.

Contemporary Christian artist Lacrae won two Grammys – Best Contemporary Christian Album and Best Contemporary Christian Song/Performance. During his acceptance speech, he spoke about using the gifts that God has given you to make an impact. If you listen to his music he isn’t a traditional gospel artist. He leans more in the hip-hop/ contemporary space.

“Labels are important to reduce confusion. But at the same time there will never be a label that will be able to capture all of what God has put into us,” said Lacrae about not conforming to the label of gospel artist in its traditional form. In other words, be who you are and don’t worry about where you fit in, just create.

Another big winner during the premiere ceremony was rapper Killer Mike, who took home three Grammys. These wins were a big deal because not only did he win in all three categories he was nominated for. This was his first time winning after being in the industry for decades.

“I want to encourage people out there that are chasing their dream. If it feels like you’re slower if it feels like some other people are reaching the finish line first or ahead of you. Don’t worry just keep running your race,” said Killer Mike about his win.

Not giving up on your dreams seemed to be the main theme from the winners last night. Singer Victoria Monet shared a similar sentiment.

“It’s a battle between time and effort. It’s either you give up before your time happens or you put enough effort into where your time meets you and you’re up face to face and you win. And that’s what happened here tonight,” said Victoria Monet. She took home three out of the seven Grammys she was nominated for.

Jay-Z who received the Global Impact award also spoke to pushing through your dreams. But before he made that point he held the Grammys to the fire. He acknowledged Will Smith’s boycott of the 1989 Grammys for not televising the rap category, which still isn’t televised. To his personal boycott in support of fellow rapper DMX, who was not nominated after having two number-one albums that year. He continued to point out the inequities of the Grammy’s recognition of Black artists.

“I’m just saying we want y’all to get it right. At least get it close to right,” said the rapper. He goes on to question the Recording Academy’s decision-making for their top award of Album of the Year.

“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics that doesn’t work,” said Jay-Z. Shining a bright light on the controversial issue of the Grammys consistently passing over Beyoncé for album of the year. The “Renaissance” singer has been nominated in the category four times with zero wins.

Jay-Z ended his speech by encouraging people to keep showing up for themselves regardless of their adversity.
