'You Can't Be Bob. No One Can Be Bob. Bob Is A One Of A Kind.' - Kingsley Ben-Adir

*The story of Bob Marley, the legend deemed as the king of reggae music, amounts to more than just his acclaimed songs about poverty, social change, and racism.

In the new “Bob Marley: One Love” biopic starring Kingsley Ben-Adir (“Barbie,” “Secret Invaders”) and Lashana Lynch (“The Marvels,” “The Woman King“), a true love story is revealed.

The film showcases his love for his country, his wife Rita, his children, and certainly his music. There’s also pain present.

The film compels the audience with an examination of what caused the pain during his life. But, how does one embody a legend that epitomizes an entire genre of music?

We caught up with British actor, Ben-Adir to chat about his process of finding the spirit of Marley. He shared that his process of finding Marley was through his family and friends.

“Really to find Bob on a personal level, like to understand who he was as a human being off stage, like behind the cameras. His private persona and who he was, I learned about all of that with his friends and family,” he said. “They shared with me, everything. Anything I needed to know, they were always there. And they were on set every day. So, my process was them,” continued Ben-Adir.

The process of finding himself again after embodying the persona of Marley is an art.

“You know, with Bob, we were only ever trying to tap into his spirit. It was never trying to do an impersonation or a mimic or trying to be him. You can’t be Bob. No one can be Bob. Bob is a one-of-a-kind. You can’t move like him. No one can sing like him. There’s no one on this planet who can come in and do his vocals,” revealed Ben-Adir.

While Ben-Adir readily shares the connections he made with the Marley family, he hasn’t had the time to make the same connection in Jamaica.

He revealed that even though most of his time was spent in the makeup chair, on set, he did enjoy the country.

Bob Marley: One Love” is in theaters starting February 14, 2024.
