*Dr. Umar Johnson’s debate with media personality Mouse Jones on the Hustle Over Everything podcast went viral after Johnson expressed disappointment that hip-hop, despite its global influence, has not significantly benefited the Black community.

“It ain’t done sh-t for the community. It made individuals rich, and that’s it,” Dr. Umar, Cassius Life reports. According to Mouse, Hip-Hop created a plethora of jobs in the music industry and podcasting. He also noted that drug dealers are “essential to the black community.”

Dr. Umar challenged him to name one “relevant institution that Hip-Hop built.”

“You’ve been around for 50 years, the most popular music genre in the world, billions and billions of dollars, and all you can tell me about is a few people can get jobs,” Dr. Umar clapped back. “That’s bullsh-t when you look at the cost that the black community has had to pay for Hip-Hop. A whole two or three generations of black kids growing up thinking the best thing you can do is be a gangster.”

Watch the moment via the X/Twitter clip below.

On X, one user wrote, “The interviewer was out of his depth in this particular context. His counterpoints further proved Umar’s points.”

Another commented, “The drug dealer is essential to the black community” i checked out after that.

A third X user added, “Gotta agree with Umar but counter question. Was hiphop suppose to do anything but be a Outlet/Entertainment? In my opinion I look at hiphop as somewhat of a hobby for enjoyment similar to Sports, Gaming Etc nothing more or less.

Do you believe Dr. Umar’s assertion about hip-hop is valid? Sound off in the comments.
