*“Stealthing,” the practice of nonconsensual condom removal during sex, is a betrayal of trust and a calculated violation with alarming psychological undertones.
According to the New York Post, research from the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia links this act to the “Dark Triad” traits: Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. These traits reflect the dangerous manipulative mindset of the perpetrator who is self-centered with a callous disregard for others.
In a survey of 416 sexually active males over age 18, researchers found that “individuals who were aroused by stealthing scenarios and who reported a behavioral history of stealthing scored significantly higher on machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy” than guys who don’t engage in deceptive bedroom practices.
“There [are] associations between all Dark Triad traits and all types of condom use resistance,” wrote study authors of a recent report on the relationship between severe personality flaws and stealthing.

Some countries have moved to criminalize stealthing. In March 2023, a 28-year-old man from the Netherlands named Khaldoun F. became the first person in the country to be convicted of the offense. A judge sentenced him to three months probation and fined him $1,060 after he slipped off a rubber sheath without his bedmate’s knowledge.
Stealing is recognized as a criminal offense in various parts of the world, including certain regions of the United States. The Post notes that, given its rising prevalence, there is an urgent need to address its legal, social, and psychological consequences.
California became the first state to ban the act in 2021, categorizing it as sexual battery under civil law. This allows victims to sue for damages. Similarly, New York is considering legislation to amend civil rights laws, aiming to give victims of stealthing the ability to take legal action.
“[Stealthing leaves] victims exposed to the physical risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, as well as the mental violations of dignity and autonomy,” reads the bill. “By passing this legislation, New York would recognize that victims of nonconsensual condom removal experience real harms — emotional, financial, and physical — to which the law might provide remedy through compensation or simply an opportunity to be heard and validated.”
One TikToker called out her ex for stealing her, according to the Post.
“Getting your narcissistic ex banned from dating apps after reporting him for stealing you,” wrote Tea, a TikTok content creator. “Maybe don’t put women in danger,” she captioned a clip. “Just a thought.”
