‘Perry Mason’ Stars Peter Mendoza and Fabrizio Guido Unpack Their ‘Killer’ S2 Plot | EUR Exclusive

*Season 2 of the hit HBO series “Perry Mason” has kicked off and we’re five episodes into yet another curious murder mystery with Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys staring as the eponymous character.

The official plot synopsis reads, “Months after the Dodson case has come to an end, the scion of a powerful oil family is brutally murdered. When the DA goes to the city’s Hoovervilles to pinpoint the most obvious of suspects, Perry, Della, and Paul find themselves at the center of a case that will uncover far reaching conspiracies and force them to reckon with what it truly means to be guilty.”

If you’re a fan of the show, then no doubt you saw this week’s explosive courtroom drama with the Gallardo brothers in the April 3 episode. Peter Mendoza portrays Mateo Gallardo – who, with his brother, must come to terms with the encroaching possibility of his execution after he’s accused of murder. Fabrizio Guido stars Rafael Gallardo – who despite coming from a farming family, is a talented artist with the heart of a poet. He, alongside his brother, is standing trial and facing execution, and the odds couldn’t be more stacked against him.

We caught up with Guido and Mendoza to dish about what’s to come for the brothers as the rest of the season plays out. Mendoza said viewers will “see how far the corruption lies and who’s serving the justice and how is that helping or holding back the people that really need to be defended, need to be protected, need to be cared for and listened to.”

“The Latino voice is still not being listened to,” Mendoza said of the brothers’ journey this season.

“They’re fighting for them, and yet you don’t know them. And so that’s a sad reality that we still face is that it’s just a lot of noise. And so here you start to understand, you may not agree, but you can’t help but feel for them because poverty is still very present in our day-to-day. Discrimination is still very present in our day-to-day. And sometimes the people that are supposed to help lead us are also the ones that are hindering us. They are dictators and tyrants,” he continued.

“So you realize how flawed we all are and how easy power and money can corrupt and what you can do with that power and how you can hold someone back and hurt someone in a way because they’re just numbers and statistics and graphs to you,” he said. “They’re not connected because if there is no familial connection, there is no reason to care.”

Added Mendoza, “I think this storyline is so important because this Mexican American perspective has been omitted from history. I mean, really, it’s an era that I love and I’ve read it in books and I’ve read history about it, but it is so rare to see it on screen.”

“Just stay tuned because you will see that there’s not a clear answer and things are not as simple as they seem. Things are very complicated. And like I said, … you’ll see the harsh reality that these boys have to live. And also for me, what’s key is that it’s not black or white. It is the gray. We’re living right in the middle and that’s what makes it so tense and tough. But we’re going to take you on a ride,” Guido said.
