t its inception, white actors dominated the industry. They reigned over the silver screen, while Black actors were left with supporting roles. However, as we say, ‘time changes everything,’ Black actors came in and now are recognized (and loved!) by people all around the world.

Morgan Freeman

Beloved for his commanding presence and velvety-firm voice, Morgan Freeman is a fixture in American cinema. His works are among the most commercially and critically successful films of the time, notably Million Dollar Baby and Shawshank Redemption.

Whether a role requires an air of gravitas, the twinkle of the eye, a playful smile, or an insightful soul, Freeman’s ability to delve into the character’s core and infuse it with dignity has resulted in some of the most memorable cinematic characters of all time. He won a Golden Globe Award in 1989, an Academy Award in 2004, and an Oscar in 2005.

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy is a legend in various fields. From being a comedic genius who launched his stand-up career at age 15 to his iconic breakthrough on SNL, he has done it all! And who can forget the sheer musical power of “Boogie in Your Butt”?

But it’s the films that enabled Murphy to blaze a trip to the top of the Hollywood landscape. His movie career came roaring out of the gate in the ’80s with three consecutive hits: 48 Hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places.

With his social commentary, tough action, and commendable acting, Murphy reconfigured himself into a top-notch actor, earning a box-office dominance that defied his staunchest critics.

Jamie Foxx

Years ago, a young boy named Eric Marlon Bishop dreamt of becoming a professional footballer. But that never came to pass, and at 22, on his girlfriend’s dare, Bishop decided to give stand-up comedy a go. That’s when Jamie Foxx was born. And as they say, the rest is history.

Over the years, Jamie Foxx has appeared in countless gigs and movies, delivering memorable performances that have stunned the audience. Whether portraying a criminal in Baby Driver, an enslaved person in Django Unchained, or a musician in Ray, Foxx brings a level of complexity and depth to his characters that’s truly remarkable. His ventures have been recognized with several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005.

Will Smith

You can’t stop Will Smith. With his colossal charisma, easygoing wit, and affable personality, this hip-hop star-turned-actor has blitzed the Hollywood scene for over two decades. His show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, became one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history.

Smith has lots of big-screen successes as well. From classic action blockbusters like Independence Day and Men In Black to his more recent performances in Aladdin or Focus, this man is indeed a Swiss army knife of Hollywood – the very definition of an African-American success story in every possible way!

Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death at the age of 43 came as a huge shock to the world in 2020. While we only got a few years of him lighting up the silver screen, Boseman excelled as a performer in that time, proving that he was no flash in the pan.

Best known for his role as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Boseman broke into Hollywood through a series of portrayals of Black historical figures. It’s because of his versatility and capability of playing characters with manic energy and dignified stoicism that made him an unforgettable figure, imprinting his footprints in the sands of time.

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington has done pretty much everything – he’s played doctor, educator, reporter, lawyer, cop (bad and good), and more, scoring multiple Academy awards along the way. Mr. Washington has a pretty hefty stack of blockbusters, from Oscar winners like Training Day and Glory to his collaborations with the legendary director Spike Lee, like Inside Man and Malcolm X, which earned him critical praise and reinforced his status as a titan of cinema.

Samuel L Jackson

Samuel L Jackson loves to act. How can you argue otherwise? The phenomenal actor has starred in over 200 movies, a whopping total that accounts for his willingness to take on large and small projects, lead and supporting roles. You can always count on him for a better viewing experience.

From starring as the linchpin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Nick Fury to Feelin’ the Force in the Star Wars prequels, Jackson’s indomitable spirit and hard-punching performances set in stone his stature as an acting paragon scraping the cinematic hierarchy clouds.

The star received an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards, presented to him by the Acting God, Denzel Washington himself.

“I earned it. I worked for it,” Jackson shared with Vulture.

Michael B Jordan

Like many A-listers, Michael B Jordan began his career as a child model before transitioning to acting at 12. An artist in every aspect, Jordan stands as a heavyweight actor, producer, and now director – thanks to the release of Creed III – making him one of the most popular faces today.

The 36-year-old actor’s hard work has been consistent, and with over 40 TV credits and films to his name, choosing his best performance is an unfathomable task. From playing Marvel villain Killmonger to champion boxer Adonis Creed, Jordan has played his trade across various roles and genres. His inclusion in the pantheon of MTV and Emmy Award nominations attests to the brilliance he brings to his craft.

And there you have it, folks! This ends the list of the most famous Black male actors of all time. It breaks our hearts to have missed out on Forest Whitaker, James Earl Jones, Danny Glover, Anthony Mackie, Sidney Poitier, and so many more. But we all are aware that even a 1000-page book wouldn’t be able to cover all the great actors that have emerged from the Black community!
