*John Earle Sullivan, a self-proclaimed citizen journalist and activist who filmed the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt during the Capitol riots, was convicted Thursday on charges related to the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.
Sullivan, 29, was convicted of seven counts, including felony obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder.
According to court records, a federal prosecutor requested that Sullivan be detained pending his sentencing, and the judge ordered him remanded.
During his trial testimony, Sullivan insisted that he was “observing” the mob on Jan 6.
“I followed the crowd,” he told jurors. “I’m there to document.”
In response, the government played numerous videos of Sullivan urging the Capitol mob.
“I’m gonna side with anyone who is ready to rip this s— down,” Sullivan said in one video, per NBC News. “I brought my megaphone to instigate s—,” he stated in another clip, noting that he wanted Trump supporters to “f— s— up.”
A sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled for Sullivan.
Sullivan recorded the moment Ashli Babbitt was shot to death during the storming of the Capitol on Jan 6, and he sold the footage to media outlets.
We reported previously that Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was part of the mob of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol while Congress was preparing to certify Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election. Babbitt was shot in the shoulder by a white male Capitol Police officer as she was climbing through a barricaded door near the House chamber. She was one of five people who died during the riots.
The U.S. Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Babbitt was not charged because police determined there was “no evidence to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer willfully” violated Babbitt’s civil rights by fatally shooting her during the domestic terror attack, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. The officer was placed on administrative leave after the shooting.
