The Game series

*“The Game” is back again!

Season 2 of the Paramount+ series aired its first two episodes on December 15. The cast got together recently to celebrate the new season with a premiere screening in Hollywood.

Immediately following the screening was a Q&A with the cast members including Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, Barry Floyd, Vaughn Hebron, Adriyan Rae, Toby Sandeman, Analisa Velez and Showrunner and Executive Producer Devon Greggory. The panel was moderated & hosted by Jasmine Simpkins of KTLA and Hip Hollywood.

Throughout the Q&A, the cast discussed everything from Chanchez making his directorial debut during Season 2, Floyd returning to the hit series, a memorable moment between Robinson and Rick Fox on a previous season, selecting the cast for the current series, and more.

With the current season of “The Game,” Chanchez made his TV directing debut with episode 207, which he is extremely excited about.

“It was actually one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my career,” Chanchez said. “One of the most surprising things, that I ended up loving it. Honestly, I had a feeling that I would love it because I knew that I wanted to direct this group of actors. Out of every iteration of the show, I’m so honored to be able to direct this group of actors because of the way we got here.

Chanchez continued, “I couldn’t have done it without Devon Greggory. He’s the first person who gave me the opportunity to actually helm the show that I love so much, since 05′. So I went into this with an open heart and an open mind. My number one objective was to make sure that I did the best I could to be the best for these actors in the moment. That kind of encompasses the whole thing for me.”

Chanchez also opened up about the fact that despite being an iconic, record-breaking show, the series has remained “behind the curve.”

“We always said from the beginning of this that we were the little engine that could,” Chanchez said. “I mean The Game, no matter how well we did, we were always behind the curve y’all. No matter how many records we broke we were always behind the curve. No matter how successful we were it just didn’t feel as if we ever really got our roses in the moment. We weren’t asking for anything that outrageous. We were just saying, “okay well if we’re the number one show, let’s just say we’re the number one show.”

“So this iteration of the show for me, it’s a culmination of every single- all the blood, sweat and the tears. All the cancellations, all the restarts. All the energy that the little engine that could, was behind me this time. I used everything that i’ve experienced from The CW, to BET and now to Paramount+,” Chanchez continued.

The Q&A was filled with lots of laughs especially as Robinson reflected on a memory from a previous season of “The Game,” where her character Tasha Mack sucked her on-screen partner Rick Fox’s (who played himself and makes a reappearance in the new season) toes.

“From that point on, we have always just been like tight as thieves,” Robinson said. “I’m a method actress and it was just like, I’m about to dive in and we just went in. At that time he was 5x’s championship Lakers captain of the team. Don’t judge me. What you not gone do is judge me.”

There was also a celebratory moment, welcoming back Floyd to the series, who reprises his role as the hilarious and loving Tee-Tee.

“It was a lot of fun,” Floyd said. “Hosea and Wendy and even the rest of the crew that’s not here anymore- this was my first job. I was very rough around the edges. Looking back, at times a little unprofessional. These two [Robinson and Chanchez] really helped me out. They didn’t always realize it but I was learning from them all the time. I am who I am now, I owe a lot to those two.”

Floyd was originally a writer on the show and was ultimately written into the script.

“You know what’s so crazy,” Robinson said, “When we were on The CW and it was Girlfriends on one stage and The Game, was one stage, you [Floyd] were a writer’s assistant. … You [Floyd] just had an indelible impression on so many people that they wrote you into the show. He was just that dude and everybody just loved that dude. That’s just who you [Floyd] are. So humble, so grounded and so wonderful. He navigated from Girlfriends to The Game, and here you are today, so it just speaks to who you are.”

Greggory also revealed during the Q&A the process of selecting a cast to act alongside returning series stars Robinson and Chachez.

“You start with that foundation and you can’t go wrong,” Greggory said. “We have the past that’s there with us, a stable foundation. We find that connective tissue that was kind of in but out [with Brittany Pitts played by Rae]. Then we were surrounded with new and fresh talent where we brought in Analisa and Toby and Vaughn Boom. It just exploded.”
