Even Disney Says Its ‘Song of the South’ Film is Too Racist For Disney+

*Disney’s 1946 plantation musical “Song of the South” will not be included in its new Disney+ streaming service, not even with an “outdated cultural depictions” disclaimer, Executive Chairman Bob Iger confirmed today.

The movie, set on a Georgia plantation after the Civil War, is considered controversial for its depiction of black people.

Iger told shareholders that the live-action/animated film is “not appropriate in today’s world” and won’t be re-released. A debate had surfaced late last year over the use of a disclaimer tag on some Disney+ catalog titles, including “Dumbo.” In the 1941 animated film, crows that help the elephant Dumbo learn to fly are depicted with exaggerated black stereotypical voices, and the lead crow’s name is “Jim Crow.”

The crow scene was cut out of “Dumbo” for inclusion on Disney+, and the film will have the following disclaimer: “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions.”

“Song of the South,” however, will not appear on Disney+ at all, ever. Below is a video explaining the racism in the film.
