Jelly Belly Founder to Give Away Candy Factory as Part of National Treasure Hunt [VIDEO]

*Jelly Belly founder David Klein has been inspired by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to launch a golden ticket treasure hunt.

Klein sold his stake in Jelly Belly in 1980. His current candy company is Spectrum Confections. In a press release, he says, “We are going to have the ultimate treasure hunt where the winner will be receiving a key to one of our candy factories.”

There will be multiple prizes in the treasure hunt worth thousands of dollars, and one grand-prize winner will be the ownership of one of Klein’s candy factories in Florida, ABC 7 News reports.

Contest rules say participants “will be looking for a Gold Ticket in the form of a necklace with a tag that includes a code you need to use to verify your find,” according to the release.

“The biggest and best part of these treasure hunts is that anyone who joins at least one treasure hunt will be eligible to search for THE ULTIMATE TREASURE, which will be the key to one of [his] candy factories and an all-expenses-paid trip and education to a candy-making university,” said Klein.

The treasure hunt requires participants to pay $49.99 to get the riddle for their state. There is also a limit of 1,000 participants. The first clue will be released in Georgia on Sept. 30, with additional clues being revealed in the other states in the following months, according to the news release.

Klein encourages participants to record their experiences for possible inclusion in a new “upcoming series.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Jelly Belly says the company has nothing to do with a contest.

“Due to confusion in the marketplace, Jelly Belly Candy Company would like to take this opportunity to clear up the misconception that it is involved with a contest that purportedly offers a candy factory as its grand prize,” the company said in an online statement. “In 1976, Mr. Klein, an independent third party, came up with the name ‘Jelly Belly’ and other novel marketing ideas. Jelly Belly Candy Company has not had a relationship with Mr. Klein since 1980 when it acquired the trademark.”
