OUR ROOTS – Black History Future Past: Mary Jane Seacole

Mary Seacole

*The Nightingale Hospital which was built in East London within 10 days, this April past, is being wound down after taking no new patients.

It would not function for the purpose for which it was set up, as it was to receive Covid-19 patients, who were expected to have arrived there. Only a few did.

Other hospitals around London coped well, and chose to keep patients in their care units. This Hospital as-is with a couple of other hospitals in the UK is named after Florence Nightingale a British nurse who put her life at risk to help the sick.

Then, there’s Mary Jane Seacole, the greatest Black icon from Jamaica who used herbal remedies to nurse British soldiers back to health during the Crimean war. She is appreciated just like many in her role today.
