*Complexcon was definitely the place to be this past weekend in Long Beach, CA and I got the privilege of pushing through the crowds of people during this Hip-Hop filled 2-day event. I found myself with a map in my hand, sweating and excited to meet world-renowned barbers at HBO’s “The Shop” activation.
If you’re just catching up, LeBron James and Maverick Carter came together with HBO Sports to present a series that is unfiltered barbershop conversation with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment called “The Shop.” The show visits barbershops around the country to give viewers the barbershop experience. Which you can watch or stream on HBO right now. “The Shop” teamed up with Complex this year, providing a live barbershop experience with free haircuts, shape – ups, and sneaker cleaning, courtesy of the SneakerLab.
Walking up to “The Shop” activation people were surrounding the entire shop taking pictures, making appointments and getting their shoes right. I was guided inside and got the opportunity to do a one-on-one with celebrity barber Marcus Harvey aka BarberStar.
Harvey started barbering at the age of 15 and has developed a client list that consists of some of the biggest names and brands in the industry such as BET, Hennessy, Sprite, Nas, Chris Webber and Grant Hill who showed up this weekend to get his hair cut. The Bevel affiliate barber was a jokester saying if he wasn’t a barber he’d be a stripper named Hot Ham and Cheese.

But when talking about the show, he spoke on why it’s such a great show to watch by stating …
“The barbershop is the last brick and mortar that really exist right now. It’s the last thing that’s involved in the community. So when you come to the shop it’s like a confessional you’re able to kind of express what your ultimate thoughts were so whatever you’ve been thinking about as far as pop culture, as far as just living life you like bring those words out of your mind and out of your heart into the shop to see how it really works. Your barber tells you about your clothes, relationships, business, you find all those things in the barbershop and that’s the thing that makes the show so dope.” He also confirmed for the ladies where your man talks about you at “Yes! Ladies if y’all want to know this is where your man talking about you at.”
Marcus is definitely a person to know if you’re in need of a cut or line-up so check him out at thebarberstar.com and on Instagram at themarcusharvey. Also, check out “The Shop” on HBO.
