*’A Christmas Story Live’ Is a classic musical that follows nine-year-old “Ralphie Parker,” whose only dream is to get a BB gun for Christmas.

The special show attracted its audience with a star-studded cast of Matthew Broderick, Maya Rudolph, Chris Diamantopoulos, & Jane Krakowski. However, that didn’t appear keep them there to help ratings.

Only 4.5 million viewers tuned in Sunday night and based on these numbers, “A Christmas Story Live” looks like one of the lowest rated live TV musicals.

The three-hour special on Fox earned a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 and some viewers took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with the lengthy live musical remake.

Just like in real life however, Christmas is about the kids! Does anyone know if they enjoyed it? Or was it the old Grinch and Scrooge personalities that can’t seem to see past the original classic and just want to see the 24 hour marathon once more. I have never seen the stage version of “A Christmas Story” and this adaptation didn’t make me want to run out to get my nieces and nephews the latest hot ticket item. Yet, I didn’t mind sipping spiked egg nog and cocoa to get in the spirit while watching.

Here is my take on the best and worst moments of “A Christmas Story Live”:

Best Moments

  1. Top favorite moment is seeing David Allen Grier as Santa Claus. Kudos to Fox for Melanin Santa.
  2. Jane Krakowski’s performance was one of the highlights. As Ralphie’s teacher, she sold every moment and was a showstopper. She had the best costumes of the entire cast.
  3. Wardrobe did a great job! Not only with Jane Krakowski’s character but making the overall period piece feel authentic.
  4. The choreography was impressive… a little tap dancing can bring any musical life.
  5. The honoring of the first responders of the California Wildfires. That was a nice touch Fox. Especially to recognize those that lost so much around this time and to acknowledge those that gave so much and are real life heroes.

Worst Moments

  1.    Did the narrative voice from the original movie need a face? Mathew Broderick as the narrator was creepily placed in the back of scenes and he stumbled on his lines a time or two.
  2.     Ralphie’s singing was ugh! Andy Walken may have been a shoe-in looks wise being spot on in the appearance of the little boy originally cast, at times it seemed as if Ralphie was screaming not singing.
  3.     Maybe it should have been a taped special instead of live. The show had a few sound issues and a couple of cast members faltered over their lines which could have been solved with a take 2. No one watching would’ve known the difference if it weren’t for the sporadic cheers from unseen crowd.
  4. Could the story be told in maybe one hour tops? I did get a bit antsy when it went over the 2 hour mark. I know it’s a classic but this is the day and age of ADHD.
  5. While Jane Krakowski was one of my personal faves in the show. I think the Ralphie fantasy scene was a bit unsavory. For a moment there was a thought of “Why is she trying to seduce this little boy?” Then I remembered it was just a dream. Go figure.
