*Retired NBA star Magic Johnson surprised his wife Cookie with an accompaniment of family and friends who showed up for their 25 anniversary celebration in Monaco last weekend.
It was a black tie affair held at the Yacht Club de Monaco. But before they arrived in Monaco, the couple were photographed enjoying Venice, Italy tourist attractions including a romantic gondola ride.
Theirs is a story of black love that endured through Magic’s public ups and downs. Cookie has remained with her husband through it all. Including his world famous HIV diagnosis in 1991.
The couple, married since 1991, celebrated their union with over 100 people; including celebrity friends and family members. All of whom traveled to help the couple honor one quarter century’s worth of years together as man and wife.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. (born August 14, 1959) is an American retired professional basketball player who played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 13 seasons.
After winning championships in high school andcollege, Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and an NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and won four more championships with the Lakers during the 1980s. Johnson retired abruptly in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted HIV, but returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game, winning the All-Star MVP Award. After protests from his fellow players, he retired again for four years, but returned in 1996, at age 36, to play 32 games for the Lakers before retiring for the third and final time.
As we said above, other celebs and famous faces found their way to Monaco to be a part of Magic and Cookie’s celebration. Steve and Majorie Harvey, Samuel and LaTanya Jackson, LL Cool J and his wife Simone, Smokey Robinson and his wife, Bill Bellamy and his wife, Emmitt Smith and Pat Smith, Tina Knowles Lawson and Richard Lawson, Vanessa Bell Calloway and her husband and many more.
According to Essence, guests got their boogie on until the wee hours of the morning, enjoyed chilled Moet from a piano and dined at elegant “C” shaped tables in honor of Cookie. It seems Mr. Magic Johnson spared no expense or detail for his and Cookie’s special day.
