*“NBC Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt was announced Friday as a moderator for one of the three upcoming presidential and vice presidential debates set for this fall.
The three debates between presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will be handled by Holt, CNN’s Anderson Cooper with ABC’s Martha Raddatz, and Chris Wallace of Fox News.
Elaine Quijano of CBS News will moderate the vice presidential debates between Mike Pence and Tim Kaine, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced.
Steve Scully of C-SPAN will serve as a backup moderator for the three presidential debates.
The challenge for the Commission was to seek journalists who Republican nominee Donald Trump would not accuse of pro-Hillary Clinton bias.
“These journalists bring extensive experience to the job of moderating, and understand the importance of using expanded time periods effectively. The formats chosen for this year’s debates are designed to build on the formats introduced in 2012, which focused big blocks of time on major domestic and foreign topics. We are grateful for their willingness to moderate, and confident that the public will learn more about the candidates and the issues as a result,” commission co-chairs Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr. and Michael D. McCurry said in a statement.

- First presidential debate (September 26, Hofstra University): Lester Holt, NBC News
- Vice presidential debate (October 4, Longwood University): Elaine Quijano, CBS News
- Second presidential debate (October 9, Washington University in St. Louis): Martha Raddatz, ABC News and Anderson Cooper, CNN
- Third presidential debate (October 19, University of Nevada, Las Vegas): Chris Wallace, Fox News
