*History was made Saturday night at the 2016 Spirit Awards.
It seems that for the first ever in awards show history, a transgender person has won a major film prize.
Mya Taylor, star of the Indie film “Tangerine,” won for Best Supporting Female, according to EW.
“The first thing I thought is this movie ain’t going to be sh–,” Taylor joked on Saturday about her initial reaction to hearing the film would be shot on an iPhone. “But it turned out amazing.”
Taylor added this plea for more casting of transgender actors: “There is transgender talent. There’s very beautiful transgender talent. So you better get out there and put it in your next movie,” she said.
In the critically acclaimed film, which is also noted for being shot on an iPhone, Taylor plays Alexandra, a sex worker.
Via Instagram, Taylor received a note of congratulations from fellow transgender actress, Laverne Cox of “Orange is the New Black.”
