*In a significant act of clemency, President Donald Trump has granted a commutation to Larry Hoover, the 74-year-old founder of the Gangster Disciples, a notorious Chicago-based gang.
Hoover’s legal team confirmed the decision, which ends his federal life sentences stemming from 1997 convictions. “Larry Hoover’s federal life sentences have been commuted by President Donald Trump,” stated Bonjean Law Group in a release to ABC News. However, Hoover remains behind bars due to a separate 200-year state sentence tied to the 1973 murder of 19-year-old William Young, a Chicago drug dealer.
For nearly three decades, Hoover has been held in solitary confinement at ADX Florence, a supermax prison in Colorado known for its extreme security measures. “Mr. Hoover, who is now 75 years old, spent nearly 30 years in solitary confinement at ADX Florence — the most restrictive, draconian supermax prison in the United States,” his attorneys noted. Following the commutation, plans are in place to transfer him to an Illinois prison, though no timeline has been specified.
Hoover’s case has long sparked debate. Supporters argue he has been unfairly targeted by authorities and point to his personal transformation. According to The Jasmine Brand, in a 2024 court appearance, Hoover declared, “I am no longer the man I was,” emphasizing his disavowal of gang ties. Yet, critics maintain that he has continued to exert influence over the Gangster Disciples from behind bars.

Hoover’s legal team expressed gratitude for Trump’s decision, stating, “Thankfully, Mr. Hoover’s pleas were heard by President Trump, who took action to deliver justice for Mr. Hoover. We are thrilled to see that Mr. Hoover will be released from federal custody.” However, they also criticized the judicial system’s handling of his case, arguing, “The courts have demonstrated a complete unwillingness to consider Mr. Hoover’s considerable growth and complete rehabilitation.”
They added: “Despite the court’s unwillingness to do the right thing, Mr. Hoover has been able to keep his voice alive through the incredible work of many advocates and supporters.”
This clemency is part of a broader wave of actions by Trump, who also granted relief to reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley and former Congressman Michael Grimm. While the commutation lifts Hoover’s federal sentences, his state conviction ensures he will remain incarcerated.
