

*It’s Black History month in the UK, and it is timely that EURweb contributor, TAYO Fatunla‘s cartoons are presently on display at the Limoges International Airport, West Central France, all throughout October.
Tayo finds it is humbling for his work to be on display at the airport concourse and is grateful for the opportunity arranged by and Limoges International Airport and Salon International. He has built an international reputation through his work with numerous publications and organizations and has contributed cartoons and illustrations to Nigerian dailies such as Punch, Daily Times, ThisDay, and The Guardian (Nigeria), and internationally in Der Spiegel (Germany), Internationale (Italy) and Courier International (France) all top weekly publications in their respective countries.
His work spans editorial, educational, and cultural projects, reflecting a deep commitment to visual storytelling and representation.

Tayo is best known for his educational illustrated cartoon series Our Roots, which highlights and documents Black history and heritage. The series has been published in various countries and is recognized for its powerful role in educating audiences about African and African diaspora contributions to global history. He has held exhibitions and conducted workshops in several countries, sharing his expertise and engaging diverse audiences in the power of cartooning and illustration.
Tayo has worked with respected institutions including UNESCO, The British Museum, and The National Maritime Museum in London. These collaborations reflect his dedication to cultural education and historical preservation through art.
In 2001, Tayo Fatunla received the Crayon de Porcelaine, a prestigious cartooning award in France, honouring his artistic excellence and international impact. He has held exhibitions and conducted workshops in several countries, sharing his expertise and engaging diverse audiences in the power of cartooning and illustration.
Tayo’s editorial cartoons on display at Limoges international airport cover various international issues and news stories as he often draws from an African perspective. This exhibition has been made possible by the officials of the Cartoon Festival of Saint-Just-le-Martel, Limoges, who partnered with Limoges International Airport to exhibit his cartoons at the airport’s concourse. Tayo, who draws and documents history, has made history himself.

Nigeria at 65
It’s the most populous country in Africa and it’s Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary which was on the 1st of October and often marked nationally and internationally by series of celebrations, Historical documentaries, entertainment and reflections all throughout October. Nigerians are still expecting to feel impact of “bold reforms” the president promised. Are they impatient?

He is recipient of the 2018 ECBACC Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award for his illustrated OUR ROOTS creation and series – Famous people in Black History. TAYO Fatunla is a former cartoonist with some Nigeria news publications and was honoured as the Professional Creative Cartoonist of the year at the 2024 Annual Achievement Recognition Awards, presented by The Building Blocks Initiative in the United Kingdom.
