Viral video shows Susan Rice attacking Black teens on porch
*Stupid is as stupid does. A 44-year-old Karen named Susan Rice was arrested after a disturbing incident in Johnson City Village, NY went viral. The July 18 altercation shows Rice confronting and striking two Black teens who were sitting on a porch.
According to witnesses, Rice became angry after hearing the teens laughing and assumed they were laughing at her. She approached the porch, taunted them, and said, “We are the police,” even though she holds no official position.
Susan Rice charged after trespassing and hitting two teens
Rice trespassed onto the porch and hit both teens. The 16-year-old resident defended himself, punching her and knocking her unconscious. Video of the incident quickly spread online, sparking public outrage and debate.
On July 21, Rice turned herself in and was charged with second-degree harassment, trespassing, and endangering the welfare of a child. She was released with a ticket for a future court appearance.
Rice’s boyfriend, Police Chief Zikuski, was present at the scene
Off-duty Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski was at the scene but did not stop the situation from escalating. His inaction has led to serious questions about abuse of power and conflict of interest.
Public demands accountability after Rice claims police power
Community members are outraged that Rice, a registered nurse, claimed police authority by saying “We are the police.” Critics argue she used her boyfriend’s title to intimidate the teens.
The teens’ mother, Kristina Montgomery, posted the video on Facebook, stating that her sons were harassed without cause and calling for justice. Her post gained traction, amplifying public calls for accountability.
Employer places Susan Rice on leave for violent behavior
Rice, who worked at the Greater Binghamton Health Center, has been placed on administrative leave. The center said it follows a zero-tolerance policy for violent actions involving staff, even outside the workplace.
Her future employment status is uncertain, pending legal proceedings and internal review by her employer.

Binghamton city hires independent attorney for investigation
The City of Binghamton hired attorney Karl J. Sleight to lead an independent probe into Chief Zikuski’s conduct. Findings will be made public, with transparency promised by city officials, reports WBNF Radio.
Meanwhile, Assistant Chief John C. Ryan is acting as interim police chief to avoid any conflict of interest during the investigation.
Community divided over teen’s punch and Rice’s behavior
Many viewers praised the 16-year-old for defending himself and setting boundaries against Rice’s aggression. Others raised concerns about whether Zikuski’s relationship gave Rice a false sense of authority.
Debates have emerged over race, privilege, and law enforcement accountability. Online users are calling this a textbook example of “Karen” behavior turned dangerous.
Public attention grows amid Zikuski’s controversial history
This isn’t the first time Zikuski has faced scrutiny. He was previously placed on leave in 2015 over a now-dropped sexual harassment complaint, adding to concerns about his leadership.
The city now faces growing pressure to act swiftly and transparently. Community leaders are demanding policy changes and training on power dynamics and racial bias.
Zikuski has served as Binghamton’s police chief since 2008. He was placed on administrative leave on July 20 while an independent investigation is conducted into his role and responsibility during the incident.
Why this story resonates nationwide
The viral video and Rice’s arrest highlight issues around privilege, race, and the abuse of perceived authority. Many are using this case to push for greater protections for youth, especially young Black men.
With emotions running high and the investigation ongoing, this case has become a flashpoint for discussions on justice, equality, and accountability in American communities.
