*For two years leading up to the fatal shooting of Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens, 59-year-old Susan Lorincz repeatedly contacted authorities to complain about neighborhood children near her Ocala, Florida apartment.
Per PEOPLE, beginning in January 2021, she made between six and eight calls to 911, often accusing the kids—including Owens’ four children—of trespassing, yelling, or making threats, according to Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods. Neighbors described her complaints as “false reports,” saying she often harassed the children by filming them and using racial slurs.
Residents told reporters that Lorincz became known for her hostility. One neighbor said she “was angry all the time that the children were playing out there” and would make “nasty” remarks. In one incident, she allegedly shouted, “Get away from my house, you Black slave,” and called the children “bastards,” according to affidavits cited by CNN and PEOPLE. Despite her actions, Lorincz once referred to herself as the “perfect neighbor.”

The tension escalated on June 2, 2023, when Lorincz confronted Owens’ children as they played outside. After accusing one boy of leaving his iPad in a field near her home, she threw the device and a roller skate at him, striking his foot. Lorincz then placed her first 911 call of the night at 8:54 p.m., claiming, “I feel threatened in my own home… I’m fearing for my life. I’m very scared.” Dispatchers advised her to stay inside and wait for officers.
Moments later, Owens, accompanied by her 9-year-old son, went to Lorincz’s apartment to confront her. Lorincz fired a single shot through her locked door, striking Owens in the chest. In her second 911 call, Lorincz told dispatchers, “Oh my God. This lady just tried to break down my door. I shot through the door.” Owens died later that night.
Authorities determined the shooting was “not justifiable under Florida law.” Lorincz was arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, battery, and assault. In August 2024, she was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The case is the focus of Netflix’s “The Perfect Neighbor,” which examines how a pattern of fear and harassment ended in deadly violence.
