*An editorial cartoon is typically recognised as a visual commentary on current events, employing symbolism and imagery to communicate a distinct perspective. Rather than offering solutions, these cartoons aim to stimulate thought and encourage reflection on critical issues. Cartoonists utilise techniques such as caricature, exaggeration, and metaphorical illustration to analyse social and political matters. The most impactful editorial cartoons are founded upon carefully selected topics and distilled into concise drawings and symbols that convey a central idea. Text is generally minimal, ensuring the illustration functions as the primary interpretive element.
The ideology associated with Nnamdi Kanu has seen diminished influence during his incarceration. Following an extensive legal process, a Nigerian court found the separatist leader guilty of terrorism, treason, and involvement with a proscribed organisation. Kanu received four concurrent life sentences. Although the prosecution advocated for the death penalty, Judge James Omotosho declined, citing shifts in societal attitudes toward capital punishment. The conviction was based on evidence suggesting that Kanu incited violence through broadcasts in support of Biafra. Throughout the proceedings, Kanu denied all charges, questioned the legitimacy of the court, dismissed his legal counsel, and chose not to mount a defence. He was absent when the verdict was delivered, having previously been excluded due to disruptive behaviour.
The Biafran conflict remains a pivotal chapter in Nigeria’s history and cannot be overlooked. During my tenure as a cartoonist at Punch newspapers, I observed colleagues engaging collaboratively, sharing ideas, and developing distinctive interpretations, eventually published as editorial sketches. The atmosphere was characterised by professional respect; esteemed Nigerian cartoonists including Femi Jolaoso (now Jolaolu), Kenny Adamson, Boye Gbenro, Dotun Gboyega, Tayo Fatunla, Ish Alimi, and Morak Oguntade, valued each other’s contributions and recognised the significance of both definition and interpretation within editorial cartooning. On social platforms such as TikTok, responses to my work have varied: some members of the Igbo community express support, while others offer criticism or engage in robust debate. The legacy of the Biafran war is shaped by considerable loss of life, and its former leader’s return was widely acknowledged.

Under Kanu’s leadership, ongoing unrest has led to over 20,000 fatalities—a substantial figure considering the ideology was officially consigned to history in 1970. After leaving Nigeria, Kanu was apprehended in Kenya, and some commentators attribute his actions to personal ambition. In 2014, he founded the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which advocates for independence.
In 2017, IPOB was designated a terrorist organisation. Its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, has faced allegations of violent conduct and criminal activity in recent years. Failure by cartoonists to uphold the interpretive core of editorial cartooning may undermine their professional standing within the industry.
Nigeria’s Biafra war originated with Biafra’s 1967 declaration of independence under Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
