*The Los Angeles Police Department has released body-camera footage showing the fatal shooting of a woman’s dog outside her Canoga Park apartment. Still, much of the public attention is now focused on two issues: the officers’ actions and the department’s unusual decision to blur the faces of the officers involved.
Video appears to show one officer drawing his weapon almost immediately after seeing the dog at the doorway. Later, during what appears to be a calm exchange between Marseille and the officers, the same officer can be seen pointing what appears to be a firearm directly at her.
The incident occurred on June 13 after officers responded to reports of a woman screaming inside an apartment complex. As it turned out, the screams were not signs of distress but cheers from resident Marie Marseille celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
What began as a routine call quickly escalated into a deadly encounter that left Marseille’s beloved dog dead and sparked outrage across social media.
Bodycam Footage Shows Fatal Encounter
The video begins with Marseille opening her apartment door to speak with responding officers. Her two-year-old golden Saint Bernard doodle, Jameson, immediately approaches the doorway and begins barking.
One officer quickly draws his firearm.
“Put your dog away!” one of the officers shouts.
“That’s a big-ass dog,” the officer wearing the body camera says to his partner.
“I ain’t getting bit by that, bro,” the other officer responds while holding his pistol.
Marseille appears to reassure officers that Jameson is not aggressive. She returns to the doorway and attempts to keep the dog inside while continuing to speak with police.
The footage shows Jameson wearing a blue Knicks jersey as he moves near the doorway.
Moments later, the dog exits the apartment and enters the hallway. After barking again and taking a step toward the officers, one of them fires four shots.
The footage shows Marseille and the second officer standing behind Jameson when the shots are fired.

Questions About Police Tactics
The body-camera footage has generated intense scrutiny over the officers’ actions before the shooting occurred.
Body-camera images also appear to indicate that the officer may have been carrying two firearms during the encounter.
According to the footage, the officer’s right hand initially hovered near what appeared to be his service weapon. After Marseille attempted to secure her dog, he appeared to draw a second weapon with his left hand and continued holding it throughout the remainder of the interaction.
Those details are expected to be closely examined as investigators review whether the use of force was justified.
Viral Video Fuels Public Outrage
Public reaction intensified after a separate video surfaced showing Marseille sobbing and embracing Jameson’s body after the shooting.
The emotional footage quickly spread online, with many viewers questioning whether the encounter warranted deadly force.
For many observers, the fact that officers were responding to what turned out to be celebratory cheering rather than an emergency has only amplified concerns about how the situation unfolded.
Jameson’s death has since become a flashpoint in a broader debate over police interactions with household pets and use-of-force decisions during routine calls.

Why Were the Officers’ Faces Blurred?
One of the most unusual aspects of the LAPD’s video release had nothing to do with the shooting itself.
NBC4 reporter Eric Leonard noted that the department released the body-camera footage more quickly than it typically does following officer-involved incidents. However, he also pointed out that the video had been edited and included blurred images of the officers involved.
“We’ve been looking at these body-worn videos for years. I don’t remember another instance where officers’ faces were blurred ever before,” Leonard said.
The decision has sparked additional questions about transparency and accountability as the investigation continues. While LAPD has not publicly explained why the officers’ identities were obscured, the move has drawn attention because body-camera footage is often released to provide public insight into police conduct during controversial incidents.
The unusual editing choice has become a story of its own, adding another layer of scrutiny to a case that has already generated widespread public attention.
Investigation Underway
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she has spoken with Police Chief Jim McDonnell to ensure an investigation into the shooting.
As officials review the incident, questions continue to mount about both the decision to shoot Jameson and the department’s handling of the video evidence.
For Marseille, the investigation comes after the loss of a dog she considered part of her family. For many who have watched the footage, the lingering questions extend beyond what happened in the hallway and into how much transparency the public can expect as the case moves forward.
