*Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is hitting the road on a nationwide tour to promote her new memoir, “Lovely One.”
The book, according to publisher Random House, chronicles her family’s journey from segregation to her historic appointment as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, the Associated Press reports.
In a recent television interview, Katanji called it “the story of the promise of America.”
“I started out thinking about how grateful I am to be in this position at this point in time,” Justice Brown Jackson told ELLE.
“To be tapped as the first Black woman to do this. I felt like I wanted to share my joy by sharing my story. My story is one of inspiration and hope—a way of giving back,” she added.
“I would also say, there was a lot of curiosity about me when I was first nominated. You’re thrust into prominence. People wanted to know, Where did I come from? And I thought telling my story, in my own words, was important.”
The book tour kicks off Tuesday at New York’s Apollo Theater, making stops in Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, and San Francisco.
“One of the things that is most hopeful and inspiring about my story is how fortunate I felt to be coming of age at that time where we did have the kinds of bonds that transcended things like political views,” Justice Brown Jackson said in her Elle interview. “I don’t know how we return, but I do know that it once existed. So we have something to strive for.”
Justice Brown Jackson said, “Being a first carries with it the responsibility of success. You really want to do well, because you understand that people are judging not just you, but your entire kind. So there’s pressure there, but it’s a kind of pressure that I have been in before in my life.”
In a previously released statement, she explained, “Mine has been an unlikely journey. This memoir marries the public record of my life with what is less known. It will be a transparent accounting of what it takes to rise through the ranks of the legal profession, especially as a woman of color with an unusual name and as a mother and a wife striving to reconcile the demands of a high-profile career with the private needs of my loved ones.”
