Anthony, a Black 19-year-old, is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf, a white 17-year-old student athlete, during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. Anthony has maintained that he acted in self-defense, CBS is reporting.
The final jury consists of 12 jurors and six alternates, none of whom are Black. The outcome has become one of the most closely watched aspects of a case that has drawn national attention and intense online debate.
Defense Challenged Jury Selection
The controversy centers on a Batson challenge filed by Anthony’s defense team during jury selection.
A Batson challenge is a legal objection claiming that potential jurors were removed because of their race. The process stems from the landmark 1986 U.S. Supreme Court decision in “Batson v. Kentucky,” which prohibits prosecutors and defense attorneys from excluding jurors solely based on race.

Anthony’s attorneys objected after prosecutors used peremptory strikes against three Black female prospective jurors. Defense lawyers argued the women were similarly situated to white jurors who remained on the panel.
Prosecutors responded that race was not a factor. Instead, they argued the women were struck because they worked as educators, a profession they believed could influence how jurors viewed a case involving high school students and a school-sponsored event.
Judge John Roach Jr. accepted the prosecution’s explanation and denied the Batson challenge, allowing the strikes to stand.
No Black Jurors Were Selected
With the challenged jurors removed, no Black jurors remained on the final panel.

Prosecutors Defend the Process
Prosecutors have maintained that their decisions were based on race-neutral factors and denied that race played any role in jury selection.
The state argued that the challenged jurors shared professional backgrounds as educators and that those occupations factored into its strategy during jury selection.
The judge ultimately agreed that the prosecution’s explanations met the legal standard required under Batson.
What The Ruling Means
Legal experts frequently note that Batson challenges can be difficult to win because attorneys only need to provide a race-neutral explanation for their decisions. The trial judge then determines whether those explanations are genuine or merely a pretext for discrimination.
In Anthony’s case, Judge Roach concluded that prosecutors provided sufficient race-neutral reasons for the strikes.
The ruling means the jury selection process will stand unless an appellate court later determines that the decision was made in error.
Importantly, an all-white jury is not automatically unconstitutional. Courts focus on whether jurors were excluded because of race, not whether the final jury mirrors the racial makeup of the defendant or the broader community.
