Joy Reid Joins Angela Rye’s State of the People Tour
Award-winning journalist Joy Reid has joined forces with activist Angela Rye on the “State of the People Power Tour.” This nationwide initiative aims to empower Black communities through grassroots engagement and sustainable infrastructure. Reid’s involvement brings a powerful voice to the movement, emphasizing the importance of civic participation and community solidarity.
The tour, which began in Atlanta, is making stops in cities like Birmingham, Durham, Raleigh, and New Orleans. Each location focuses on addressing political and economic challenges faced by Black communities. Reid’s participation underscores the tour’s mission to inform and activate citizens for systemic change.
Empowering Communities Through Direct Action
The State of the People Tour is more than just a series of events; it’s a movement rooted in service and strategic action. In each city, the tour offers tangible support, such as record expungement services, family assistance, and civic education workshops. These efforts aim to address immediate needs while building long-term community resilience.
In New Orleans, for example, a young mother working two jobs sought help from the tour to pay her electric bill. This highlights the tour’s commitment to providing real solutions to everyday problems faced by Black Americans.

Richmond, VA: Next Stop on the Tour
The tour’s next destination is Richmond, Virginia, this weekend (05-16/17-25). Events will kick off with a welcome reception and a call to action at The Len in Shockoe Bottom. Saturday’s “Day of Power” will feature a rally, resource fair, and workshops focusing on the economy, gun violence, and more at Abner Clay Park and the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia.
These events are free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for community members to engage with the movement and access valuable resources.
Building a Collective Black Agenda
A key component of the tour is the Black Papers Policy Project, which includes over 20 policy proposals developed by more than 100 Black experts. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive agenda addressing the unique challenges faced by Black communities across the nation.
By combining immediate support with long-term policy planning, the State of the People Tour seeks to create lasting change and empower communities to take control of their futures.
Joy Reid’s Continued Commitment to Advocacy
Joy Reid’s involvement in the tour follows her departure from MSNBC, where she hosted “The ReidOut.” Known for her unapologetic approach to advocacy, Reid continues to use her platform to highlight issues affecting Black communities and promote civic engagement.

Her participation in the State of the People Tour reinforces her dedication to informing and empowering citizens to take action for systemic change.
