*Most people her age might opt for comfort over style, but Ivy Marie Broussard isn’t most people. The 102-year-old resident of a north Houston independent living facility turned heads during a recent morning encounter with ABC13, appearing at 9 a.m. dressed in a green suit, high-heeled sandals, jewelry, and complete with makeup.
“High heels?” Broussard asked when questioned about her footwear choice. “You know, I still wear them.”

Born on December 22, 1922, in Houston’s Fifth Ward, Broussard participates in social activities, regularly attending church, fashion shows, and various events while prioritizing self-care. “I go down there and get my nails done once a month,” she said, explaining her beauty routine. Mental sharpness remains a priority as she makes time daily to complete pages in a word-search book.
Her fashion-forward attitude comes with a playful spirit. “I want to look good so I might catch me a boyfriend,” she said. “I’m still alive.” Broussard even indulges in her favorite beverages. “I like Smirnoff,” she says. “That’s my favorite.”
The former nurse and hair stylist occasionally cooks for fellow residents in her building. She raised two sons with her late husband, and now counts eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren among her descendants.
Family members emphasize that Broussard is independent in every aspect of her life. She does her own grocery shopping and recently took an Amtrak train from Houston to California. She next plans to travel by bus to Louisiana to visit a casino.
She’s still strong and healthy at 102 years old, incredible ?❤️ pic.twitter.com/3lEfKxJjt5
