Doctor Tried to Save Malcolm-Jamal Warner at the Scene
*Elberth León, a doctor on vacation in Costa Rica, rushed to help Malcolm-Jamal Warner after he was pulled from the water. The actor/musician had no vital signs when responders arrived.
Emergency personnel and tourists trained as doctors worked together to try to revive Warner. Their efforts were intense, heartfelt, and driven by the hope of saving a life.
Three Doctors Joined Forces in Desperate Rescue
As Warner lay unconscious on the beach, two tourists ran over and identified themselves as doctors. They immediately began CPR alongside the first responder already assisting.
“Immediately, [first responders] began providing first aid to Malcolm, but he had no vital signs,” the doctor recalled. “Two tourists ran over to help. They identified themselves as doctors, making a total of three physicians at the scene.”

Doctors Fought Against Time With Every Resource Possible
Minutes later, the Red Cross arrived and brought a defibrillator and additional life-saving tools. Still, Warner remained unresponsive.
The intense rescue efforts, including expert medical support, unfortunately could not bring him back. The beloved actor was pronounced dead at the scene at age 54.
Why the Doctor Fought So Hard to Save Warner
Dr. León, who led the CPR effort opened up about the emotional impact of the moment. He said that trying to save someone’s life—especially a parent who died protecting a child—deeply affects rescuers.
“The people who take part in this kind of rescue are always deeply affected,” the doctor told Us. “You have to understand it’s not easy, and it also takes time to heal.”
Warner’s Final Act Was Saving His Daughter’s Life
According to Dr. León, head of Costa Rica’s Tourist Police, Warner and his daughter were caught in a strong rip current. A bystander rescued the daughter, but Warner was swept too far out.

“Obviously, as a father, he fought for his daughter,” León shared, “but the current in that area is very strong, and they couldn’t accomplish the objective.”
Autopsy Confirms Warner’s Cause of Death Was Accidental
The Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed Warner died from “asphyxia due to submersion.” His death was ruled accidental, and his body was released to the family on July 23.
The heartbreaking incident happened while Warner was vacationing with his family. His brave attempt to save his daughter ended in tragedy.
The Doctor’s Role Made a Lasting Impact
Dr. Elberth León’s effort to revive Warner has been praised by witnesses and emergency crews. Though the outcome was tragic, their dedication did not go unnoticed.
