*Disney has released a new trailer and poster for its upcoming live-action adaptation of “Moana,” offering a fresh look at the reimagined story set to arrive in theaters in 2026. The film stars Catherine Lagaʻaia in the title role, alongside Dwayne Johnson, who returns as Maui, the shape-shifting demigod.
Alongside the trailer debut, Disney also introduced an“Artistry of Moana” featurette, giving audiences a behind-the-scenes perspective on the production. The featurette includes commentary from Johnson, Lagaʻaia, director Thomas Kail, costume designer Liz McGregor, and choreographer Tiana Nonosina Liufau, highlighting the creative process behind the film.
The cast expands beyond its two leads, with John Tui portraying Chief Tui, Moana’s father, and Frankie Adams appearing as her mother, Sina. Rena Owen takes on the role of Gramma Tala, a central figure in Moana’s journey and cultural heritage.

The live-action project is directed by Thomas Kail, known for his work on “Hamilton,” and brings together a group of producers that includes Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Executive producers include Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auliʻi Cravalho, who originally voiced Moana in the animated films “Moana” and “Moana 2.”
Music remains a key element of the film, with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina. Mancina also provides the film’s score, continuing his involvement from the animated version.
The original “Moana,” released in 2016, launched a Disney franchise that includes its sequel, “Moana 2,” released in 2024. The upcoming live-action adaptation marks the next chapter in the franchise, bringing the story to life in a new format.
Audiences will be able to experience the reimagined “Moana” exclusively in theaters when it premieres on July 10, 2026. Watch the trailer above.
