*Charlie Wilson stood before a crowd at Baltimore’s AFRAM music festival in June and delivered news many fans hadn’t heard. “I don’t know if ya’ll know what happened to me, but I had some strokes. Feels like God has truly, truly blessed me,” the 73-year-old told the audience before launching into his performance. The appearance marked his return to the stage after one of the most difficult stretches of his life.
The strokes happened last year and hit hard enough that Wilson had to relearn how to walk, a process that took six months. He spoke about the experience on Big Boy’s podcast, saying, “I went to some shows, and I came back, and I was another person,” he said.
His wife was the first to recognize something was seriously wrong. “My wife can catch it, just like that,” Wilson said. “She said, ‘Something ain’t right wth you,’ and off to the hospital we went.”

Uncle Charlie said it was the first time he had suffered “that many strokes, at the same time” and that he retains no memory of the hospital stay. He knows, however, that his family fought hard for him during that time.
“I knew God was with me and I knew my wife was praying every day, every hour of the day,” he said.
“I am not finished yet, I’ve got a long way to go,” Wilson said.
Wilson co-founded The Gap Band alongside brothers Ronnie and Robert Wilson, the R&B and funk group behind classics like “Outstanding” and “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.”
