*Several Black mayors are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s portrayal of their cities as “lawless” by showcasing substantial reductions in violent crime. Leaders in major urban centers like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore point to police data revealing declines in homicides and shootings compared to pandemic-era highs.
In Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson reported a more than 14% decrease in homicides this year compared with pandemic-era levels. “Our communities are safer because of local initiatives,” Johnson said, Salon reports.
“Investing in youth programs, expanding mental health services, and building trust between residents and police makes the difference — not political rhetoric,” he added.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also underscored progress in her city, where shootings and killings have fallen steadily. She credited prevention and re-entry programs as well as neighborhood-based intervention strategies for the results. Meanwhile, Baltimore recorded its lowest number of homicides in nearly a decade, a milestone local officials say reflects community-driven approaches.
Trump’s narrative, which targets Black-led cities like Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Oakland, coincides with his deployment of 800 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and plans to federalize the city’s police. Local leaders, including Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, president of the African American Mayors Association, reject these moves.

“It’s not supported by any evidence or statistics whatsoever,” Johnson said, emphasizing that smaller Black-led cities are also seeing crime reductions.
Trump has frequently cited cities led by Black mayors as examples of urban decay, but critics counter that these claims ignore significant progress from community-driven violence prevention, local safety initiatives, and police-resident collaborations.
Nationally, FBI data confirms violent crime has dropped for two consecutive years, driven by community partnerships, youth engagement, and recovery from pandemic disruptions.
