*In an exclusive interview with EURweb, cast members of the spine-chilling spy film, “Black Bag,” kept details under wraps. But Michael Fassbender, Regé-Jean Page, and Marisa Abela were more than forthcoming about the filming of their cautionary thriller.
What was your initial reaction when you saw the script?
REGE-JEAN PAGE: It’s an extremely easy script to fall in love with and say yes to. It’s an incredibly smart, psychologically taut, well put together thriller from David Koepp. And knowing Steven Soderbergh was going to helm this gem and driving it home gives you immense confidence.
MICHAEL FASSBENDER: You’re already in after seeing the title, Black Bag.’ It’s a very provocative title and made me curious.
MARISA ABELA: I agree. It’s a great script. As soon as I finished the script, I wanted to be a part of it.

Were there any challenges taking on your roles?
MA: Going back to the script, the amazing thing is all answers are there in it. The characters are really well fleshed out and deeply layered. Each job comes with its own challenges in a positive way. But there were no obstacles I felt that we came up against.
Did you learn or have any different experiences?
RJP: Oh wow! I learned a lot from my co-stars. I came very well prepared, but I’d never been so relaxed at work as I have been on this set. I think that I learned very quickly the best way to handle these scenes was to be very embracing with the unexpected, in the moment, and let that change some of the preparation.
MF: I learned to play a little bit of the piano, which never made it into the film.

MA: I held a gun. [Laughs]. I’ve not done that before. So that was fun.
This is not the kind of film you would ask this question, but I’m going to ask it anyway. What do you want audiences to walk away with?
RJP: An intense feeling of paranoia. That’s mostly what the film’s about. Everyone is lying all the time.
MF: Don’t trust anyone!
“Black Bag” is the gripping spy drama about legendary intelligence agents George Woodhouse (Fassbender) and his wife Kathryn (Cate Blanchett). When she is suspected of betraying the nation, George faces the ultimate test—loyalty to his marriage or his country.
Michael Fassbender has shared the screen with Black beauties Jodie Turner-Smith, Nicole Beharie, and Lupita Nyong’o. After interviewing Lupita at the “12 Years a Slave” junket—I knew she would be a major breakout star—I asked Michael what he thought of Lupita.
“I could see the hunger of a new student coming out of school and that’s such a beautiful thing to see,” he told me. “It made me think, ‘I gotta get my sh*t together…” Michael can also be seen in the TV series. “The Agency.”
Meanwhile, Regé-Jean (“Bridgerton”) talked very passionately about his role in “Roots,” giving props to his African past. Before “Bridgerton,” there was the Black love story, “Sylvie’s Love.”
