*Apple TV+’s “Berlin ER” throws audiences into the heart of the toughest emergency room in Berlin, where overworked doctors battle against a broken healthcare system. The gripping German-language drama, co-created by former emergency room physician-turned-screenwriter Samuel Jefferson and filmmaker Viktor Jakovleski, premiered February 26, delivering its first two episodes with new installments dropping weekly through April 9.
For many, a career in medicine is a lifelong commitment, but for Jefferson, it became the foundation for an entirely different calling—storytelling. He channeled years of real-world experience into “Berlin ER,” delivering an unflinching look at life inside one of Berlin’s busiest hospitals.
The series centers on a chaotic emergency room in the toughest and most overcrowded hospital in Berlin, where the young Dr. Parker is seeking a fresh start in the big city after her private life implodes in Munich. “When she tries to implement necessary reforms, Parker is confronted with resistance from the underpaid, ill-equipped, and chronically fatigued hospital staff who only survive with an indispensable dose of black humor,” per the synopsis. “But in the face of an increasingly merciless healthcare system, the battered team must put aside their differences and pull together to save lives.”
“Berlin ER” stars an ensemble cast including Haley Louise Jones, Slavko Popadić, Şafak Şengül, Aram Tafreshian, Samirah Breuer, Bernhard Schütz, Peter Lohmeyer, and Benjamin Radjaipour.

In an exclusive conversation, Jefferson shared how his time in the ER inspired the series and ultimately led him to the world of television.
From Medical School to the Writers’ Room
Jefferson’s path to medicine was not a conventional one. As a teenager in the UK, he faced a crossroads between his love for the arts and his aptitude for science. “I was lucky enough to be quite artistically minded—I liked drama, acting, and English—but I was also good at the sciences,” he explained. Torn between drama school and medical school, he ultimately chose the latter, partially inspired by iconic TV shows like ER and Nip/Tuck. He envisioned a future as a plastic surgeon, but reality quickly set in once he entered the medical field.
The Harsh Realities of the ER
“The job of being a doctor—helping people and understanding the human body—is so amazing,” Jefferson said. “But the system you’re in is so challenging, high-pressure, and often very negative in terms of energy feedback.” The intense environment of emergency medicine left a lasting impact on him, exposing him to people from all walks of life, experiencing both their best and worst days. “It was almost like every day was little vignettes of life,” he reflected. “I got this amazing life training from being a doctor.”
A New Creative Calling
After two years in medicine, Jefferson knew he needed an outlet for his creative side. He took a leap, enrolling in film school while continuing to work in the ER for another eight years in London. Eventually, his journey led him to Berlin, where he connected with a team eager to develop a raw, realistic medical drama. “It was like everything perfectly fused together,” he said. “I didn’t even realize when we were making it just how much I was burning to tell those stories.”

Writing as Therapy
For Jefferson, “Berlin ER” is more than just a television show—it’s a form of catharsis. “I think I had a lot of trauma from the job,” he admitted. “Writing is therapeutic, and I needed therapy for the job that I had.” By bringing these stories to life, Jefferson found a way to process the emotional weight of his experiences and, in turn, hopes that authenticity translates to the audience. “I hope that feeling of truth comes across somehow. It does for me.”
With “Berlin ER” now streaming, viewers can step into the intense, unpredictable world that Jefferson lived firsthand—one shaped by the very real pressures, triumphs, and heartbreaks of emergency medicine. In the clip below, Jefferson shares more about how his real-life medical experience influenced the series.
